| Bio: | English actor, best known for his portrayal as UNIT commander Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart across five decades of Doctor Who. Born William Nicholas Stone Courtney in Cairo, Egypt (the son of a British diplomat), he spent his early years in Kenya and France, also serving 18 months’ National Service in the British Army, before beginning his acting career in England. After a spell in repertory theatre, he landed a number of TV roles in cult 1960s series such as The Avengers, The Champions and of course Doctor Who, where his first guest role was as Space Security Agent Bret Vyon in 1965’s The Dalek Masterplan. Director Douglas Camfield then cast him as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart in 1968’s The Web of Fear when the original actor proved unavailable, and thus began Courtney’s long run as Lethbridge-Stewart (promoted to Brigadier upon his next appearance) which saw him appear in over 100 episodes of the series and star alongside every one of the actors to have played the Doctor up to and including Paul McGann (although that was in an audio drama). Courtney’s final turn as the Brigadier was a 2008 appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures, capping a long and distinguished career which also saw him appear in Minder, All Creatures Great and Small, Only Fools and Horses and Yes, Prime Minister. | Links: |
