I was absolutely enamoured with the book right up until about page 175 - along with the introduction of the plot device that poorly closed the storyline.
The GENIE claptrap was already a sadly contrived idea but it was poorly executed to top it off. A more matured audience, 14+, probably won't appreciate the conclusion as much.
Only the fantastic characterisation of the Doctor and Rose saved this book at all. There could have been many other ways that the book could have come to completion that would have been much more 'Science' Fiction friendly.
Some bits, like the Arena-do were a bit long and while humourous weren't really necessary. The fact that they crossed their own timeline during a self-fulfilling paradox could have been better highlighted with some perspective changes as well and there were bits mentioned in passing that would have made the story better if they'd actually been chapters/story.
The story probably would have got a 5 from me if not for the solid writing up until two-thirds in and that I willingly admit that Ten and Rose are my favourite combination for adventure, storytelling and their dynamics.
As a result it scrapes a 7.5 from me... but I'll vote 8 to encourage the less than 7.5 average to rise.

Let me put my cards on the table my favourite Doctor is the 3rd. I love rock music and horror movies. My favourite part of the world is the south west of England this is like my Dr Who wish list gone wild I saved it to read whilst on holiday down there which might have helped but I love it. Agree that the doctor isnt in it enough this is why I went for 8 and not a home run 10.

 | Challenges what you think you believe!! |

This book was a terrific story throughout. One of the main themes of the book challenges the reader to examine the things they've been taught. We blindly accept some things and regard them as truth without ever really looking into them and investigating. This book challenges that.

I'm really suprised at the less than wonderful rating this book scored from everyone else... admittedly it's aimed at a more mature audience - probably better for 14+ but even so it was a very well written book.
The Doctor and Martha are well written, though there could have been a bit more humour - the story was a little dark and serious though. The other characters have lots of substance and were well used as well.
The plot on the other hand was absolutely stellar. Really, as far as Doctor Who books go it was chock full of science-stuff for those who are so inclined but not impossible for someone who doesn't like that kind of thing to understand the scope and the power of what was involved. There was some Time War stuff, some Time Lord stuff, mentions of Rose... even a name drop of 'Bad Wolf'. The bad guys were fascinating too.
There was also quite a lot of insight into the character of the Doctor and his beliefs and his pain. Martha also fetched up well with her determination and steadfast loyalty shining bright.
Plot is a clear 10. The Characters score a 10 too and considering the gripping involvement of the story was created in such a short book (they're all too short!) I'd give it a 9 for how thought provoking it was.

I think that this book is really good! I love the way the author picked Ancient Rome for the location. It has a sense of humour and as being a teenager(14 yrs.old), I would say that this book is worth reading for!!!

Overall a pretty good book, though I haven't got much to compare it to - my first NewWho book... though I also bought Peacemaker (Another 4 hours and I'll have that on read too, 240-ish pages just really is too quick).
The plot/angle used for the storyline allows for all sorts of enjoyable suprises and while not resorting to complicated science jargon (apart from the Doctor's normal babble) it's a solid and easily comprehendable concept.
The Doctor and Martha are very in character and the original characters are all very endearing, funny and entertaining as they play their roles.
The humour in particular is absolutely fantastic, a mix of many types to cater to all people and some really good lines.
Not particularly deep though I'm afraid, I have read OldWho books and a lot of other fiction and it is definetly young-teen orientated and doesn't really penetrate deeper into the characters or the situations - it just uses the characters to play their roles and complete the story. Start through finish all self contained with little that lingers.
10 for enjoyable/laughs, 8 for plot/characters and 5 for how memorable it seems... gets a 7 overall from me.

 | A SHAME-COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER |

A shame. Could have been so much better.
It was the perfect way to bring the cybermen back. But they were used so badly. It was obvius Terrance Dicks couldn't fit all the story he wanted in a Quick Reads. It amy have been good as a novel but would be best as an episode.
still, the cybermen are back this christmas so maybe that will do better.
Of course i love the new series too but despite the fact that i wasn't even born, i love to find out about the classis dr who.
What were Whovians like me reading back in the 70s.
The Iron Legion is great! The stories are quite long too. A bit like a classic story. Definately worth a good read!
STORIES
The Iron Legion-9
City of the Dammned-9
The Star Beast-8
The Dogs of Doom- 7
The Time Witch-7
The only thing that puzzles me is why they didn't put in Timeslip. Does anyone know?

2 excellent story's & 1 so so story. Starting with Keeper Of Traken. Not only the best story here, but one of the best 4th Doctor story's ever. Poignant & exciting. Great performances by Anthony Ainley & Sarah Sutton as well as a mean & moody performance from Tom Baker. It's a pity then that (my favourite) Doctors last outing is in such a boringly ordinary story as Logopolis. Just plain dull & the most boring regeneration scene ever. Things perk up for the first 5th doctor story as Peter Davidson takes up the, very heavy, baton from Tom Baker in a moving & warm tale. The DVDs have some excellent documentaries.

An average sort of DVD set. Not much to recommended on the The Invisible Enemy disc except another story that now looks a lot better with the optional CGI effects. As for K9 & Co, I suppose you either love it or hate it. I am in the latter.

When I first came to listen to this I was expecting something that would have a few good bits and a plot that had been done loads of times before.
Instead what I got was probably the best Big Finish yet that I've heard. The plot was simple and interesting and the entire play was great. The only small thing was that I don't really get the title but that doesn't effect it at all.
Highly recommended.

This is the best historical of all of Doctor Who, despite being the first in the series' 'pseudo-historicals'. The plot is well-written and holds together perfectly, the dialogue is witty and funny, and the fact that the Monk has a TARDIS is one of the all-time great Doctor Who cliffhangers!
The disc itself is alright, with a great commentary, a clearly rushed obituary for Verity Lambert, although it does work well. The little 'Lost 12 Seconds' featurette is great, and puts the missing sequence into context perfectly without making a song and dance out of things.
Overall, one of the best DVD releases so far.

The daleks are viciously better here. Nasty dialogue and nasty beatings by the ogrons on Susan Mendes, and Sylvester is at his most misleading best. He is such a great Doctor. Sad he hasnt done as many audios as the other doctors. And Spiridon being back is a good and for me long awaited idea. The infection is a good line too. Sadly this is too short. Could have been extended and still have been just as good.

Colin on his own, like Sylvester, is a great idea. He works well with or without companions. And the Doctor in his sixth form is quite brilliant and underrated.
ID is more of a techno thriller, and a grand return to the long missed three part serial. More cut down, more story and therefore more pace overall.
ID is quite disgustingly realistic in places. The two monster smashing each other to pieces isnt very nice stuff, but entertaining and absorbing. And the thought of mind surgery is sickening but definitely not beyond scope. It seems Eddie Robson has things to say in his scripts. And good things too.
And then is the brilliant URGENT CALLS, such a fresh new way for an audio story, nearly all on the phone. And the tale is nicely paced and beautiful performed by all involved. A classy tale i like more and more and now give it a ten out of ten.
This book is alright, it has quite a good history of the Daleks (however it only goes up to Destiny of the Daleks), and a decent story.
I would give this 6 1/2, but I've rounded up.

This unfairly called rubbish, boring and silly, but people are wrong to a certain degree!
I like the story, although the idea of a time tunnel used for punishment instead of scientific research is silly, and the prosthetics on the Borad is the best seen in the series, classic and new, and the Coming Soon trailer is a brilliant new addition to the 2|entertain DVDs!
There are problems, though, mainly in the production values area of things; the Timelash is full of tinsel, and the Bandrils look like sock puppets!
This story is NOT poor, but it certainly falls short of the 'good' category.

This story works in a way very much like Genesis of the Daleks; a mad scientist (Miss Winters/Davros) and their science group (The SRS/The Elite) try to take over the world (Earth/Skaro) with a robot (The Robot/Daleks). Yes, I know Daleks aren't robots, but it's a fair point.
The story itself is good, fast-paced and witty in places. The new Doctor performs well and the UNIT background helps to maintain continuity.

This title was my very first experience with Dr. Who audio dramas. To be honest, I initially downloaded Max Warp for one reason only, Graeme Garden. And he didn't disappoint.
It was nice to hear Paul McGann as the Doctor, and he as well as everyone else obviously enjoyed themselves a great deal with this story. From the Doctor taking time out to adjust an entry on the "funky board" to Jeff telling Lucie to stand there and "stick out your bits," the story was entertaining, the dialog fun to listen to and the actors were engaged; the whole play holds up well under repeated listening despite a few random plot holes.
My only problem now is, I can't watch Top Gear without seeing James May and thinking "Shut up, O'Reilly!" Maybe that's not such a problem after all.

 | Well written and gripping |
|
 | | |
Benny and the Glass Prison has to be one of the best Dr Who related novels.
The plot is gripping with excellent characterisation and a sense of humour.
It is recommended reading for anybody who follows the Benny audio plays (especially Seasons 8 & 9) to set the scene for what happens there.
A dark brooding stranger in a long coat moves around a West Coast US town hunting vampires, with sidekick in tow. The basic premise of this novel, has a certain familiarity about it. However, a good idea is a good idea, and Doctor Who has 'borrowed' sci fi themes throughout its history.
The material here is handled quite well, but if you read a lot of these novels this one stands out as being out of character.
That said there is plenty of action and things rattle along at a goodly pace.
