Don't Knock it!

What:Battlefield (BBC classic series videos)
By:whites, southend, UK
Date:Monday 29 May 2006
Rating:   10

Why do lots of people seem to hate this story? (i'm asking for it now!)

I am indeed very biased as this is my Doctor but for me just the Doctor's performance on this one merits a top vote...

The poorest of season 26 maybe, but season 26 was a cracker so top marks.

The Best

This is the last story of the classic series. With that in mind the end of this story is a pure tear jerker (i was 9 when this story was on telly- but still shed a tear now!)
I think the doctor's last lines sum up what DW has been throughout it's long history.

Just imagine what season 27 could have ben like...

We love you Mcoy and Aldred!

EXTERMINATE!!!

What:I am a Dalek (Quick Reads books)
By:the Traveller, An underground bunker

A light, easily digestible read. The Doctor and Rose are written true to their television characters, and there is some nice Dalek action. There is a "recycled-seen-it-all-before" type of feel but this can be ignored if you're prepared to simply enjoy the story.

Nearly Doctor-less

What:The Sleep of Reason (BBC Eighth Doctor novels)
By:the Traveller, JD Towers
Date:Sunday 28 May 2006
Rating:   7

The well-written supporting characters make up for the absence of the Doctor and his companions. But the ending seems a bit rushed and the aliens are introduced to late into the story, so we don't really learn much about them.

Tails off

What:Father Time (BBC Eighth Doctor novels)
By:the Traveller, Stranded on Earth
Date:Sunday 28 May 2006

The Doctor's relationship with Miranda is written perfectly, making for some excellent father-daughter scenes. Unfortunately, the plot tails off towards the end, and finishes with a cliched and predictable finale.

Weird

An entertaining, if rather confusing book. I agree with Hatman below, the plot does seem a bit disjointed. However, the character of Ace comes out better in print rather than screen, and the continuing story of the Doctor finding Ace's corpse is rounded off nicely.

My first big finish audio story

What:The One Doctor (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:Jamie Collins, essex,england

As i said this is my first audio story to listen too and i loved it i thought colin baker was a great doctor and i know now that if he hadnt gotten sacked he would have been a great doctor and bonnie langford as Mel was surprisingly good and she didnt even scream once! but the story and the pace was good and i loved it and gave me a much bigger interst in big finish audio storys.Oh and i also wanted to say that it would have been better if we understood more about what those aliens were who overshadow the entire city of Generios and threaten the doctor about getting the 3 "tributes" but still i really enjoyed and i look forward to listening to more big finish audio storys!

One of the better ones

What:Vengeance on Varos (BBC classic series videos)
By:the Traveller, friend of Hatman, Dantooine (just past Brighton)
Date:Saturday 27 May 2006
Rating:   6

One of the only few reasonably decent Colin Baker stories - but even then it's not faultless.
The violence and death that litter this story is graphic and more than not, is unnecassary. Still, the character of Sil is a good one, and Colin Baker's Doctor begins to become a bit more likeable, despite him leaving Peri to suffer without even seeming to care - again.

Doctor Who begins to die...again

What:The Twin Dilemma (BBC classic series videos)
By:the Traveller, friend of Hatman, The Death Star (opposite Seaford)
Date:Saturday 27 May 2006
Rating:   3

Colin Baker's opening story is, to be frank - a mess. The acting quality is mostly terrible, the monsters look laughable, and who decided to have the new Doctor mentally unstable? Okay, it would have been fine if the unstability of the Doctor had been done tastefully and seriously, but in THE TWIN DILEMMA it just looks dreadful. Worst of all, underneath this tangled landfill site of a plot, is Colin Baker doing some pretty decent acting.

Disappointing Return of the Cybermen

What:Revenge of the Cybermen (BBC classic series videos)
By:the Traveller, friend of Hatman, New New New New New New New Lewes
Date:Saturday 27 May 2006
Rating:   6

A very average and lazily plotted story. The Cybermen are portrayed as the Doctor puts it as "a bunch of tin soldiers skulking around the universe in an ancient spaceship", and their voices are terrible. Very disappointing considering how long they had been away from Doctor Who - surely the writers could have thought of something better. Oh, and that Cybermat leaping towards Sarah, I mean honestly...

The average empire

What:The Slow Empire (BBC Eighth Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, What?

mostly good, not many bad points. bits at the beginning are bad, but the rest round it up to average. maybe The empire of hats will be better.

Chilling...

What:The Algebra of Ice (BBC Past Doctor novels)

much better than city of the dead. that was diabolical. not to mention rubbish. This book actually makes sense, unlike many of the others.

Indestructible Russians

What:The Indestructible Man (BBC Past Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, Meridien, IDAHO

Absolutley none of this makes sense. Good Russian characters, but the rest were as flat as a cardboard cut-out. Avoid at most costs.

Spirally randomness

What:Spiral Scratch (BBC Past Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, Rejavik
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   8

Probably the most random book in the series. It was ok, though, and the appearence of the snakes was well written. Bit silly near the end, however it was overall a good book.

May you live in not-very-good times

What:The Eleventh Tiger (BBC Past Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, New Moscow
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   6

It was ok-ish. the monks made no sense and it was not very well explained. better than most though.

ghostly rubbish

What:The City of the Dead (BBC Eighth Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, Probably Paris
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   2

The weakest Doctor Who book I have read. It may be unpredictable, but a story that doesn't make sense cripples the book's quality [and value]

Alien babies

What:Dark Progeny (BBC Eighth Doctor novels)
By:Hatman, nowhere
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   10

actually quite good. campness is kept to a minimum, and most of the story actually makes sense (excluding the end bit with the ghosts). Features walking cities and very predictible citizens.

A shame to have lost it...

What:Fury from the Deep (TV episode audio soundtracks)
By:Denis LeBlanc, Moncton, Canada
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   9

After the two Yeti stories, this is the missing adventure I regret not having seen the most. It is an excellent classic Doctor Who story, with great elements of terror and excitement. The conclusion's rather weak, but it is quite.. um.. original.

A true Masterpiece

What:The Daleks' Master Plan (TV episode audio soundtracks)
By:Denis LeBlanc, Moncton, Canada
Date:Friday 26 May 2006
Rating:   8

A bit long-winded, but nonetheless quite entertaining, this missing adventure is a joy to listen to. It really should've originally been written as, say, an 8-episode story, though, and I'm really not a fan of the "Feast of Steven" Christmas episode. It's still nice to have William Hartnell wish me a Merry Christmas, though...
