Intriguing

What:Faction Paradox: Newtons Sleep (Faction Paradox novels)
By:Anna, Aotearoa
Date:Sunday 17 February 2008
Rating:   10

O'Mahoney very skillfully evokes the political, scientific and religious fervour, experimentation and ultimate dis-illusionment of seventeenth century England, and combines this with the best of science fiction time-twisting as the paranoia of the era is extended to and beyond its natural conclusion. The prose is dense, and at times a little overly-archaic (though amusingly so), but still very readable and frequently beautifully poetic. The book is packed full of twists, surprises and typical Faction-style confusingness. I would thoroughly recommend this book, although I know it will take me (at least) another read to be able to put even the largest pieces of the puzzle together.

I tried! And then I tried again! And again! But i could not sit through this book! I kept putting it down (which is odd for me) and pcking it back up and putting it down! But the story just monotonously goes on and on!

not bad

I thought it was an ok book, very, very, very, very long and at times it felt like I was in the Broken Remote, trapped in an episode of The New Gods XXXVIII. A lot of things happened and then didn't happen and then never happened the same as before and time went backwards and a three-headed duck gave birth to an otter in Margate. Some king died another one came along to replace him. It was all mad stuff and lots of hints were dropped like cannon balls from a bridge onto a twenty car pile up. Then the book ended and the story didn't.

A Stingin' good time

(PUN INTENDED) OK! So I'm a massive doctor who fan who knows all about the Silurians and the Sea Devils and the Zygons and the Sontarans! I know they are bringing back the Sontarans, but I didn't know whe I heard about a book that included one of the most famous old enemies! This one! I loved this book (though it could have been a tad more believable). The Zygons are the ultimate monsters from the past but it is just ever so slightly minorly confusing! Worth reading though!

A wonderful little story, with two very mischievous Time Lords (although we don't know that!!). It's a fresh change of story for the series and time suddenly becomes a way of getting the characters to a story - something which is used throughout afterwards..

Ok! As one of the biggest book fans in HISTORY, I don't really read smaller books like this 1. But when I got further in, I couldn't put it down. For such a small book it really is absolutely brilliant. The idea of the "dalek factor" is brilliant and it just rulz as a story. RECCOMENDED!

Superb Stuff

Have to say this is the first of the unbound audios I've listened to and I was blown away, this is incredible stuff.
It really makes you long for Geoffrey Bayldon to do more, as he takes Hartnell's character and runs with it, not too much to ruin the memory, not so little it becomes impersonation.
The production is superb, the plot gripping, the story involved...marks merely removed from a perfect for the slightly convoluted 1st half of the 3rd episode. but this is fantastic stuff.

Lucid Dreaming

What:The Mind's Eye (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:Doug, Pocono Summit, PA, USA

Spoilers Ahead

I found The Mind's Eye to be a moderately interesting story, well-produced and fairly well-written. The Doctor, Peri and Erimem have come to a planet that appears to be a paradise, but is actually not nearly as pleasant as it appears. A rather interesting kind of intelligent plant life subdues its victims and weaves dreamworlds for them out of their own memories, getting them caught up in vivid dreams that they take as being reality, in which the plant itself plays roles, while it begins to slowly digest the victim. The Doctor and friends fall prey to some of these plants, and it is up to the Doctor, with a little help from members of an expedition on the planet who have questionable motives, to rescue Erimem and Peri. This involves more than simply physically removing them from the plants, and there is the additional threat of the odd "jekylls," an animal species that has a strong connection with the deadly plants.

This was an interesting story, but I felt it fell short in a couple of areas. For one thing, a great deal of time was spent in Peri's dreamworld, which was really just a rather mundane soap opera-type situation. And I also would've liked to have gotten more of a look into the mentality of the plants, so to speak, but the dream characters generated by the plants really didn't reveal any kind of specific mind at work like that. They served to maintain the fantasies and resist references to the "real world," but didn't seem to really have any characteristics beyond what would be expected from ordinary dream characters. That was disappointing.

And of course, there was significant borrowing from the Wachowskis' Matrix films, but it was done differently enough to keep the story fresh.

The one-part Mission of the Viyrans is a very creepy little oddity, kind of the nightmare to the dream of The Mind's Eye.

In addition, the "cd extras" included in this release continue to offer interesting looks behind the scenes.

Overall: entertaining, but missing that element that would hook the listener into an unforgettable story experience.
