A Masterpiece

What:Arrangements for War (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:PJ Johnson, Hoddesdon, United Kingdom

OK, let's get the formalities out of the way - I am a huge fan of Colin Baker's portrayal of the sixth doctor, even on TV, and I love the relationship that has been forged in the Big Finish series between his doctor and the wonderful Evelyn Smythe (Maggie Stables). That this story acts as such a major turning point in said relationship just reinforces in my mind the superiority of this play over so many others in the Big Finish range.

This is not a story about aliens or universal conquest, or even - despite the title - about war. It is a story of the people behind the scenes, those who are responsible for delivering their people from the grim clutches of war, and the sacrifices they may have to make in the process.

The story has been described as 'Doctor Who meets Romeo and Juliet' - and that's exactly what it is, and Sutton has taken Shakespeare's iconic masterpiece and given it a great modern twist. The characters are believable and sympathetic, their relationships heartfelt, genuine and ultimately tragic.

The cast are on top form here, particularly (as always) Baker and Stables, and of course the hypnotic Gabriel Woolf as Rossiter, who simply steals every scene in which he appears. The chemistry between Woolf and Stables throughout the play is an absolute joy to behold.

The cherry on the icing on the cake, though, is the ending - described by some as a 'cop-out', I can think of no better way to bring to a close not only this wonderful story, but also the tension between the Doctor and Evelyn which has been quietly brewing since Doctor Who and the Pirates.

This is a fascinating, gripping and ultimately very moving tale of love, loss and political intrigue, and as such ranks among my all time favourite stories - as remarked by an earlier reviewer, what a shame this story could not have been made for TV - it would have been awesome!

Quality AND quantity!

This book is amazing! The lack of books and audios makes no difference to the sheer brilliance and depth of this book. Even now, after having it for 1 1/2 years, still find out new things I didn't know.
Great.

Surprised me!

What:The Invasion of Time (BBC classic series DVDs/Blu-rays)

From the reviews I had read, I was almost completely put off buying this release, but I took a chance, and spent £x on it to find out... it's pretty good, actually! Sure, the first two or so episodes are boring and slow-moving, and they could easily have been condensed into one, the remaining few are brilliant, especially the surprising ending to episode 4, when we see the Sontarans! The DVD is worth buying just for that. It has a variety of decent extras, although the prank 'The Elusive David Agnew' featurette leaves a lot to be desired. So, to sum up, a good release that is definitely worth buying. Steer clear of the aforementioned documentary, though!

What a great story, the three doctors really is. Twas a shame that William Heartnell could not appear fully but still was memorable. I love the quirkiness and the absurd. What were those jelly creatures and Omega was an awsome creation and one that returned tyhroughout the series.

We need a re-release!!!

This would sell like hot cakes if it was re-released with more and better extras, as the story is great (by Doctor Who script maestro Robert Holmes) and the new characters gel brilliantly. The brilliant alien menace just adds to the brilliance!

What:Bred For War (BBC classic series DVDs/Blu-rays)
By:Huw Davies, Taunton, United Kingdom

The stories are all brilliant (in my opnion, the Sontarans are the most consistent monsters as they have no bad stories), but the actual reason for the boxset is shrouded in mystery. Whereas with the Master boxset the stories were new and unreleased, the Bred for War stories have already been released. This is basically just a gimmick for the sake of the Sontarans returning to our screens in 2008.

Stunning performances by the whole class, together with a brilliant script, make this one of Doctor Who's all-time greats. It is also very inventive in the way that there are no aliens: merely primordial creatures created by the natural world. Very well done.

Best of the era!

Definitely the best McCoy story, Remembrance of the Daleks has to also be one of the better Dalek stories as well, superior to those such as The Chase and Destiny of the Daleks. A nice touch, also, with the whole story being set in and around Coal Hill School.

Almost perfect...

What:The Haunting of Thomas Brewster (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:Matthew David Rabjohns, Bridgend, United Kingdom

The only thing that stops this story from being a totally brilliant one is the score. And I thought Delta and The bannermen was bad, but not as irritating and distracting as the score is on this otherwise very well written and extremely enjoyable play. The thing is, if its gonna be a Haunting tale, you dont want rubbish scores do you? You want creepy old scores like those of old from the Web Of Fear or something like that. The music totally destroys any sense of real scares. If you can try to get past the music, there is still an excellent story behind it. A well crafted story in the usual Jonathan Morris style, with very fine performances from all those involved.

There are some good characters again, and some nasty deaths, but overall this is just a focus on one man. A good presentation here, a realistic sound score too, so as you can see only the blasted music stopes this from being a big winner. Maybe the guys at big finish could do a remix of the track of this one, if its at all possible. Doctor who scores arent supposed to be cute, their supposed to be creepy. Bring back Dudley Simpson!

Memerable to say the least!

What:The Five Doctors (BBC classic series videos)
By:The Master NM, London

A great way to introduce someone to the worlds of Doctor who. This story was absoloutly fantastic in every sense of the word. Combining all five Doctors apart from the late William Heartnell, still keeping the formatt true to form, replacing him by William Hundrell, who captures his character wonderfully. Placing all 5 doctors in the death Zone, including some of the Doctors old foes including a Dalek, some cybermen, a Yeti, one raston Warrior and the Master. Aswell as the Doctors former companions, Sarah Jane, the Brigadier, Susan, Zoe and Jamie, and the Doctors most recent companions Turlough and Tegan.

The Master, bribed in order to help the doctor and to retrieve him from the death zone. Though, the Doctor has been taken out of time, its up to each and every one of them to get to the dark tower at the heart of the timelord race where Barusa lies in wait.

I was on the edge of my seat at every oppitunity. The cybermen didnt stand a chance against the old raston warrior who wiped them all out in no more than 6 seconds per scene. The Brigadier still hasnt lost his charm, wit nor his senses when he finds himself chased down a cave by a yeti and the whole story made complete sense. It was surely memerable!

A beauty of a book!

I loved Martha Jones- really did- she was one hell of a companion. She and the Doctor make one hell of a team and thats not just because she looks good in the part. Shes given a good back story to follow, and portrays her character really well. This storybook was just as good as the last. There was nothing i didnt find highly unbelievable or over them top. As before, the artworks outstanding, some of the finest writers have been given the task to write for the Doctor and his assistant and have shown us how good they really are.

This story book, like the last cannot be missed- it cant- not if your an avid fan of the series as a whole! I guarentee that this book willl satisfy you just like the last- in content, story telling and from pen to paper, this story book was a huge success!

Met up to my expectations perfectly!

IF you love a good story or the odd comic or two, then youll love this Doctor who story book compiling lots of different stories featuring Rose and the 10th Doctor.

The stories themselves arent all that bad, some are -ofcourse better than others but thats my opinion. I love the artwork and the story telling and it all fits in with the television series superbly.

If you havent got this and your a Dr who fan, then you must, its one of my favroute bits of my collection and thats no lye! Honestly, if you want a good 4 hour read, then pick this up and have a go, who knows, you might like it!

An intresting outing for the 1st Doctor. Some intresting ideas & a well told tale, but(as in the TV series) Susan is very irritating.

Oh, i had to write a review for this. The Doctor and Jo are on top form, the welsh characters are all superb, the giant maggots are a fantastic creation and the Boss was Bossy- excuse the punn! This episode touched upon themes such as how we keep the enviroment from turning into industrial waste. Something Dr who should of done along time ago, however i think the time was right when they did broadcast this because this here is another eg of one of the episodes I treasure in my collection- enough to know that this was one of the best in the series- no dought of that and Unit were given a story they could sink thier teeth into. The episode that sent out one or two messages that meant Preserve our planet and keep it clean! It was also the very last episode for Jo and I thought that brought i smile to my face because it made for a happy ending and authough the Doctor had lost someone very dear to him, he met someone much later on by the name of Miss Sarah Jane Smith!

American WHO!

I know some fans love this story because its in the style of what some fans would call 'Something new' special effects and all that but to me it was a bit of a let down because i enjoyed the beginning, whilst anticipating the episode ahead but the gun violence was never ever that bad and when they shot the 7th Doctor, i thoughtm well, they didnt even give him a proper send off. However the story itself was ok i surpose, and the TARDIS, well, i did sort of prefer the old one and the one in Tom Bakers day, the old wooden panels but you only have to look at todays tardis, and i love that! The 8th Doctor is still attached the series i am glad to say and it was a shame that he didnt get a proper outing as the doctor because that would have added to his riegn. He was a good Doctor, i dont deny the episode at all, only that i was all too American in some places and Dr Who was always that bit British and this simply wasnt!

Quite Masterly!

The Regeneration between the 4th and 5th, not something to miss. All the time, the watcher was watching and ready to make his move. "He was the Doctor all the time" says Nyssa to both Tegan and Adric. This story isnt really one of my all time favroutes, however its one that sits amoungst my collection. It sees the master up against the doctor once again and this time the Master soley wants to destroy the Doctor- nothing new then. But its great story with which the main charcters are at thier best and the Doctor is a new man ready to take to the controls of the TARDIS like always!

Hh,and be sure to watch where Peter Davisons mimics Patrick Troughtons Doctor and Pertwees!

How fitting this is- this story!

Spoilers ahead- at your own risk!

Oh I love this episode, the plot may be a little confusing but nothing that i couldnt understand. So, the doctor forsees a moment in time where an assisination on his home planet takes place involving the Presidents death and so the Doctor intends to put a stop to the assasination by leaving a nbote that noone intends t do anything about. The assasination is lure by the master that for once actualy works and the Master challenges the Doctor in the matrix where all things are possible. Chancellor goth is working for the master and intends on assasinating the Doctor in the matrix only the master wants something more than the doctor dead and that is to destroy the half of the galaxy in which Gallifrey rests in. He falls into his doom at the end when the doctor tricks him but at the very end, we see him escape into his TARDIS. Tom Baker is as mysterious as ever here and whilst hes on his own, we- as the audiance cannot rely on the companion telling us what might be happening when we can not assume for sure ourselves.

The Master here, unable to regenerate, has somewhat changed into something particularly nasty and something even i wouldnt want to meet in a dark and unsuspecting tunnel.

This story was one of the very best and in my opinion ranks as one of the top 10 in my collection!
