Strangely Compelling

What:Assassin in the Limelight (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:Doug, Pocono Summit, PA, USA
Date:Wednesday 24 September 2008
Rating:   4

I'm really not sure what kept me listening to Assassin in the Limelight, but I kept on through the whole thing. I think listening to it in four sittings (one episode each) was helpful there.

Briefly, the coolest thing about this story was Knox's TARDIS. Aside from that, the American accents were really terrible (but were they perhaps somewhat accurate?), and in turns, I wasn't sure if I was listening to a serious effort gone disasterously wrong, or intentional shlock. There's even a bit of incidental music here and there that sounds like a theremin, like this is a satire of old-time radio, which is probably what it is.

Assassin in the Limelight is really pretty bad, and leaves me with question marks over my head, but I strangely seem unable to give it less than a 4...

OK!

The first and last time I watched this was on video. However, this DVD seems to make it much fresher and I enjoyed it throughly. The incidental music is painful (like all Davison era) but once you forget that - it becomes an enjoyable tale.

A totally addictive novel. When I say, "I couldn't put it down," I mean I actually didn't stop reading until I was finished. With so many twists and turns in the facinating plot, and the continuation from the tv series, it makes for fantastic reading! A++++!

simply the best

In brief, this is simply one of the very best books in the Past Doctor range- not only are the main characters spot on and developed well, the book provides so much food for thought on the nature of faith, belief, right, wrong... a very mature book and well worth the read.

Yes, the doctor is the one who caused it, but this time he doesnt realise it. Every other time he has noticed it, so thats the end of that little squabble of it forever being the doc's fault. no one is flipping perfect anyway for goodness sake! This is for the best part a great and original fresh new aproach to telling a story, back to front really...but flaming good stuff with solid performances from everyone involved. the opening scenes are actually loud and flipping scary too. well acted indeed.

cool again...

Nicholas Courney reads this gripping tale of wartime and ghosts. This is the perfect Doctor Who tale. SHould have been made into a full cast audio normal story with a different doctor. but this fits the third doctor time so well. the story is not pansiish and really hits home about a tough subject matter. This really is a cracker of a story.

the best rendition of them all...

Frazer's Patrick Troughton is uncanny. Its almost spooky. There really was one point when i thbought it was Pat speaking. Man this guy knows his Troughton. And the story is good and well paced and yet again easily could mould into the season into which it is set.

1: another marc platt tale full of his trade mark coolness

2: peter purves is back again and delivers a knockout performance as steven.

3: the sound and music score is even better than series one of the companion chronicles.

4: this is an engaging tale of old russia, dripping with atmosphere and could easily have been a missing adventure for William Hartnell.

2: THIS PORTRAYS ALL THE ABSURDITY AND SILLINESS OF THE TOM BAKER LAALLA WARD YEARS.

3: LALLA WARD DOES A PERFECT TOM BAKER IMPRESSION.

4: THE STORY ITSELF IS WITTY AND CLEVER AND BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN.

5: SOME GOOD LIGHT RELIEF AFTER THE MORE HARD HITTING STORIES IN THIS CHRONICLES FIRST SEASON.

Season seven was a gritty and cool series in doctor who history. And the blue tooth could oh som easily slot into that hard hitting season of doctor who. the return of the cybermen, and at last a story with the third doctor facing off against them. long overdue. Caroline John is perfect as the storyteller.

The return of Maureen Obrien as Vicki. Do i really need to say anything else? well, ok...this is one of those long line of Marc Platt great Doctor Who tales. Satisfied?

What i love about this first and second.

What:Fear of the Daleks (The Companion Chronicles audiobooks)
By:Matthew David Rabjohns, Bridgend, United Kingdom

Rating:   10

What i like is we get new stories with old Doctors. What a fresh and cool idea. The companion chronicles series has yet to really let me down. All the eight ive heard so far have been brilliant.

Fear of the daleks is the first second doctor tale for audio, and boy does it resonate Patrick Troughton's time on Doctor Who rite to its roots. This is such a great story. I love the mad scientists, the dippy daleks and all that that made the second doctor's tenure one of the best in the shows history. Wendy Padbury reads this story brilliantly.

So we dont get Matt Waterhouse, who is actually wrongly accused of not being able to act. Instead we have Andrew Sachs acting as the five hundred year old Adric in this great tale. This is why i like the big finish range so much, the styles and stories are so fresh and inventive. All new storylines bringing back people from thbe doctor's past. Sarah Sutton again reminds me of why she was such a good companion. And Peter Davison really needs no praise. He is a great doctor. Bringing back Adric was a risky idea, it had to be handled right, and thank goodness it was. Paul magrs has done it again!

THE DEATH COLLECTORS...

I think Stweart Sheargold has produced an even better tale than Red, and that was excellent enough. This really sounds like a claustrophobic adventure that could and should be on screen. Sylvester Mccoy leads a good cast in a gritty space goth opera style adventure. The dar traders are a good new monster that are bound to be back soon i expect. No complaints from me then. Katarina Olsson delivers another great performance as the computer Nancy. And Spider's Shadow is another tales of the unexpected esque story that really rounds off another great and different Doctor Who audio! Great!

7 not 4 for me.

What:Four to Doomsday (BBC classic series DVDs/Blu-rays)

A forgotten gem in my opinion. I know this story isn't really well regarded by a lot of fans but I really enjoyed watching this again cleaned up on DVD. Top marks to Stratford Johns who really shines & some great sets. It's only a crap ending that spoils it. The extras are nothing really special. The first footage of Peter Davidson is a bit dull & there is a short but interesting interview from 1980 with the, then, new Doctor.

Heavy Breathing, Beeps, and Decay

What:The Death Collectors (Big Finish: The Monthly Adventures)
By:Doug, Pocono Summit, PA, USA
Date:Monday 15 September 2008

"Death is merely a science, Doctor. Measure it correctly and a cure can be found."

If you decide to listen to The Death Collectors, get ready for a very strange eighty-five minutes. This story is really quite dark, featuring a companionless seventh Doctor, perhaps very near his end, with a couple of veiled references to the events of the t.v. movie.

Here we get a quarantined planet infected with "Decay," a crew that risks everything to violate the quarantine, and a handful of Dar Traders - strange beings who exist on the threshold of death and sound like The Shadow from (classic) season 16's The Armageddon Factor. Sound designer David Darlington has gone a bit crazy with sound effects in this one, and the incidental music matches the grim storyline. It all combines into a listening experience that frays the nerves a bit, though it is kind of interesting, and reminds me of the David Tennant story "42."

The one-part Spider's Shadow is a finishing coda in which the Doctor and a royal court are caught up in a "chaotic time loop."

Marvellous

What:The Dr Who Annual 1971 (World Annuals)
By:Frankymole, Bristol
Date:Sunday 14 September 2008

Although a couple of the stories are reminiscent of the Troughton annuals (e.g. the Doctor and Liz shrinking themsleves down to explore the universes in an atom!), there is for the first time a feeling that the authors have watched the TV series, with many stories capturing the new, gritty feel of Earth-bound UNIT stories in the dramatic mould of the 1970 series. A rare book, but highly recommended. Really groovy illustrations and cover, too!

one of the best doctor who books ever!x2
