| Bio: | Glasgow-born actor, writer and director. As an actor, his first notable role was co-starring with Burt Lancaster in the 1983 BAFTA-winning film Local Hero. Through the 1990s and 2000s he amassed an impressive body of work, including TV guest roles in Minder, Prime Suspect, The Vicar of Dibley and Peep Show — as well as playing an angel (not the Weeping kind!) in the 1996 Neil Gaiman mini-series Neverwhere. In 2005 he reached a new level of stardom playing foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the acclaimed BBC political sitcom The Thick of It, a role which won him a BAFTA in 2010. As a long-time Doctor Who fan, he had long expressed a desire to star in the programme, so it was relatively little surprise when he was announced as the Twelfth Doctor in 2013 — aged 55, the joint-oldest Doctor to date (along with William Hartnell). After 3 full seasons on the show, he left the TARDIS in December 2017. Trivia fact: He’s the first and so far only Doctor Who star to have won an Oscar — which he achieved in 1995 as the writer/director of the short film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life. | Links: |
