The Doctor, Romana and K9 arrive at the scene of a hyperspace collision, but when they attempt to separate the fused ships they suddenly find themselves investigating a smuggling racket. They discover the crash was caused by the Empress’ navigator who was under the influence of Vraxoin, the most dangerous, and addictive, drug in the universe. Their problems intensify when they discover one of the ships is carrying a Continuous Event Transmuter. Now damaged, it has caused local space to destabilize and released monstrous Mandrels onto the Empress. The Doctor and company board the passenger ship to help, only to find themselves pursued as the suspected drug smugglers.
