The Good: Fast-paced chase scenes, very interesting monster, and witty dialogue.
The Bad: Too many characters I didn't like.
The Ugly: A confusing sub-plot revealed near the end.

Chris Boucher is one of my favorite of the Dr. Who series writers. I also admire his scripts for the significantly unerrated "Star Cops" series. In this novel he brings along what he does best - concept and action. There is very little deja-vu in the plot. The characters are believable, especially in their motivations. Boucher has taken time to work out the cultural backgrounds to his characters so that their actions make sense.

A good story if your a Leela fan, she shines through the dross. The 4th Doctor is very much out of character here and the story goes nowhere.

This is the first of the BBC Past Doctors books I've read, and I was disappointed. Chris Boucher may be a good writer, but he missed the mark here. The doctor's dialogue is often out of character -- just doesn't have the right tone. And the plot, what there is of it, alternates between boring and confusing. Leela's character rang true, but it wasn't enough.

I hated this book. It was dull, the characters were instantly unlikeable, the Doctor was completely out of character, and the story goes nowhere.
The only one who is served well is Leela, who obviously Chris Boucher can write for very well.
Disappointing.

Dont take on board the rants of the few below the Doctor is spot on, Boucher is the only writer ive read so far that has realy captured the personalitys of the 4 doc and leela, the era and the style so there!. I do agree the charactures are unlikeable but the whole civilisation is too read the damn thing properly and you might see that. All doctor whos tv and book have some unlikeable (and dyslexic)charactures.

A really fast paced thrilling tale that has lots of intresting ideas.
Chris Boucher writes really well for Lella but doesn't quite get the 4th Doctor right
Recommend.
