| Born: | 19 November 1924 (age 88) |
| Bio: | Sunderland-born actor, real name Russell William Enoch. As a young actor, played Hamlet in the West End and built his career from there with a varied selection of TV and film roles before landing the title role in the popular ITV series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot in 1956, notable as the first British TV show to be filmed in colour. Later he appeared in classic Steve McQueen movie The Great Escape in 1963, the same year he was cast in a new BBC TV science fiction show called Doctor Who as Ian Chesterton, one of the Doctor's travelling companions. Stayed on Doctor Who for 2 years, after which he continued his career with a wide variety of TV roles including appearances in Blackadder, Coronation Street, and even a cameo role in the 1978 Superman movie. In latter years he served as a senior executive in the actor's union, Equity, and also as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. | Links: |
