Too Cute By Half

The book attempts a novelistic version of the Doctor Who historicals. Given the freedom that a novel has, Gatiss goes all out, including spies, voyages at sea, a female pirate captain, and the Doctor playing soothsayer to Oliver Cromwell. Much of it is silly in the way that "The Romans" was silly. The adventures of Ben and the Pirate Captain are just too much for me to take, too many cliches and not much contribution to the story. Gatiss has written better books than this.

Pat Troughton is written well again...

When I first read this excellent historical novel, I was glad above all else that Pat Troughton's doctor was true to form. All his little quirks wind up in this charming novel somewhere or another. And the whole tale is excellently written. Hurrah for historicals!

Well written interesting story of a well known piece of English history (too bad you brought the monarchy back though as this was the closest you got to revolution and a republic!!!). Gripping most of the time although some bits are slower paced and others plain unbelievable. Generally great though.

Oliver's Army

The second Doctor is my favourite Doctor & Mark Gattis is one of my favourite writers so I had high hopes for this book & it didn't disappoint.
A lovely exciting well plotted story that gives equal amount of action for Ben, Polly, the Doctor & Jamie.
I thought that with such a big TARDIS crew the story may sag in places but it never does.
Great to read a story were real historical characters are used so well.
Highly recommended.

Fluffy and light

The first time I read this many years ago I was not impressed but on reviewing it recently my opinions have softened slightly. Some fun swashbuckling and soothsaying kept me entertained and I found the story cracks on quite well. The only problem I had was that the regulars' actions seemed to be a little ineffectual but I guess that is a product of not being able to change the web of time, a common complaint in these type of historicals.

A better than average read but one that I probably won't return to again for a while.
