Loopy Garrulous

OK, we've had the mummies, we've had the ghosts, and we've had the vampires. The werewolves had to come along at some point. My advice is watch the better-written "Tooth And Claw" with David Tennant. My problems with "Loups-Garoux" are these: 1. If the werewolves are so powerful that the can make nearly all humans see or do anything the wolves want, what are they doing skulking around in invisible cars and trains? Why not just take over? 2. I hate stories about beings so powerful they can just twist any old person around their fingers. It makes ludicrous any idea of a person, such as Turlough or Dr. Hiyashi, standing up to them. There is no logical way around the problem. The wolves would eat everyone and that would be it. 3. Why, if being a wolf is so much more powerful, and let's face it sexy, than being a human, would any werewolf in her right mind not want to be one? Application of just the tiniest bit of logic makes the whole rationale for the story crumble to dust. The only redeeming features are an expanded characterization of Turlough, and the guest stars Eleanor Bron and Burt Kwouk delivering professional-quality performances.

a wolf of a tale!

Marc Platt always did know how to write intellegent stories with many good character pieces along with strong ideas. He brings together many components that work so well together and Loups Garoux is yet another fine example of this guys talent as a writer.

For a start there is the wolves, not bright as day but not as dark as night either, a villian who isnt as evil as many other doctor who baddies. and so Eleanor Bron returns to doctor who to voice Ileana, a great part well acted and interesting. Bert Kwouk is a great choice for Doctor Hiyashi too i must say. The performances really are very good and never ott.

And Mark Strickson gets a decent chunk of script to sink his teeth into too. Nice to hear him getting at least a bit of a storyline in the grand scheme of things again. Love the character of Rosa too.

Love the "no trees were harmed" segment too, shows thought provoking stuff again from Marc. ALways leaves those little things to think on after every story ive noticed. So Peter Davison leads a great cast in a story that is both engaging and far better then Tooth and Claw from the new series too. This is one of the strongest stories from big finish even to this day. A werewolf tale that isnt bogged down in werewolf isms. A breath of fresh air in a mostly stale horror villain story world!!!

Very clever writing. Excellent interplay between Turlough and the Doctor. And Eleanor Bron and Sarah Gale have incredible vocal range.

Boy, is this a slog...

This story feels longer than other monthly series stories, and I can't tell if that's because the pacing is REALLY slow or if it actually does have a longer runtime. Either way, this took a lot for me to get through, which is a shame because I loved the opening. Turlough seeing the werewolf during the parade fantastically opened the story and got me excited for more. Then we get to the train... This is the part where things got slowed down immensely as all of the lore is exposition dumped on us in-between moments where Turlough gets bullied by some werewolves and a side-plot about a girl in the desert.

The acting performances weren't bad, but they also weren't good either, even by early Big Finish standards. The microphones clipped A LOT! Especially during the train scenes. Eleanor Bron could barely get through a scene without her microphone giving up on itself, even when she was just calmly talking to the Doctor. Plus, that cover is one of the worst Big Finish has made. It's down there on the list with "The Highest Science."

Overall, it had some good ideas, but they were overshadowed by the horrid pacing and effects. It's certainly one I'm never going to revisit.
